Olam's role in developing Sustainable Rice
Standards.
It all began with an idea in 2011. Olam is a founding member of the comprehensive standard for Sustainable rice and has been instrumental in bringing it to life as a verifiable standard with clear goals. read about the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) here.
Market Linkage.
Olam has been involved in providing farmers with an assured value chain participation that helps stabilize the program and provide the market linkage - to customers. We guarantee off take and premiums on the farm output reflecting the quality of the output.
Marketing.
We have been a mouth piece for SRP platform, the Better Rice Initiative Asia (BRIA I & II) Project and an integral part in financing, implementing and marketing the project along with the product. We had many end customers (retailers, importers, manufacturers) visit the projects and appreciate the work being done.
Programme Support.
As part of the project implementation, Olam supports with technical and commercial insights into the market, support in setting up farmer demonstration plots, and in bringing future benchmarks to the present day practice.
Audits.
Olam plays active role in collecting and analyzing the data coming out of the farms through our Olam Farm Information System (OFIS) and complemented by a customer facing insight platform based on this data called AtSource. We get 3rd party audits done by SRP and FSA to determine levels of adherence to standards and to mark areas of improvement.
Product.
Food safety compliance and consumer protection form one of the key pillars of the project. Olam actively measures and gives feedback on the contaminants - heavy metals, pesticide and herbicide residues and others and shares market standards to improve the product coming out of the project.
